“Retirement or What Next™” for
Women Over 50 in Transition

What Is "Retirement" or WHAT NEXT™?

May 18-19, 2013
Denver, Colorado

Ruthie Neubauer, my most cherished childhood friend, has become a wise therapist and with Karen Van Allen leads workshops for women like us. The next “Retirement or WHAT NEXT™” weekend is May18-19th, in Denver, CO. — Suzanne

This Weekend is for you if you…

Feel pressure to respond to the question: What do I do with the rest of my life? Know what you want but feel inhibited. Feel isolated with your inner questions. Wish to express yourself in new ways. Want support to play with ideas and dreams. Plan to retire and have concerns.

The Experience – what we do

We create a comfortable, safe, warm environment. We facilitate a process that we have structured and designed – to help you identify where you are on your particular path and what obstacles may be in the way of working towards the fruitfulness of “WHAT NEXT”. We do this by fostering discussion on certain topics using poetry and music to stimulate various ways of thinking. We also do some very informal personal writing. Some of the time together is used for discussion as a whole group and some time is used to think for yourself quietly within the context of the group.

Our two days together have, in the past, been remarkably useful and inspiring. Our groups for the weekend are small.

We meet from 9:30 am – 4:00 pm each day. The cost is $400.00 per person for the whole weekend; $25. DISCOUNT if you register before April 25th. All supplies and everything needed will be provided. All you need to do is SHOW UP! We will provide lunch and coffee with snacks all day.

The Workshop

Our workshops provide dedicated time and confidential space to listen to your inner wisdom, to re-define “work”, to play with ideas, to explore the fullness of WHAT NEXT™, and to laugh and share time with other women who have similar questions to your own. Many women feel isolated at this time of life with deeply personal questions regarding the meaning of work and life, and wish to live life in a more conscious way making their own choices.

The Facilitators

“Retirement” or WHAT NEXT™ was co-founded by Ruth Neubauer, MSW and Karen Van Allen, MSW, both psychotherapists: Karen in the Washington, DC area and Ruth in Denver, Colorado. Both Ruth and Karen have been in practice for 25-plus years working with groups, individuals, and couples, and are artists in their own right. Karen is a painter and craftsperson as well as having experience in organizational development. Ruth is a musician, photographer, and writer. She is also on the faculty at The Washington School of Psychiatry and teaches classes to the general public on psychological concepts. She now lives in Denver, Colorado where she is teaching at Denver University and maintains a private psychotherapy practice.

“Retirement” or WHAT NEXT™ has been featured in The Washington Post, Washington Woman Magazine, More, and recently in Chapter 4 of Suzanne Braun Levine’s book: Inventing the Rest of Our Lives: Women in Second Adulthood. They have also done a live recording for Pacifica Radio (you can hear it online) on their work with women at this transitional time.

Our weekend workshops are intended to meet the needs of women who, through external events (retirement, divorce, “empty nest”, death of parents, illness of a loved one…) or internal pressures (restlessness, longings, uncertainty, feeling overloaded…) realize that a change is needed yet “what next” may still be unknown.
