No generation before ours has had the prospect of looking ahead to a second adulthood as long as the first. So the question “What Will I Do With the Rest Of My Life?” leaves us elated – and dazed and confused. We know that there must be love, but what does love mean now? To answer it, we need to evaluate our priorities, commitments, and relationships, including with ourselves. Levine says we also need to take inventory of the intimate connections that are already enriching our lives. Such reevaluations can be scary. Will my long-term marriage survive the process? In this new stage, people are exploring the many meanings of interdependence and writing a new love narrative as they live it.

tooting your own horn (Yes, they’re all related) on Feisty Side of Fifty Radio,
Tuesday, December 13, 2011 (11:00 AM, EST) with host Mary Eileen Williams.
We’ll be talking about the Fertile Void – the gravity-free zone where we sort things
out and shake things up. Where we shed the voices of shoulda-woulda-coulda thinking
and begin to sense the presence of an internal compass, our own voice.
What’s the solution?

“….Back when my children were small and I was working long hours, a couple of my colleagues and I founded the Thank God It’s Monday Club. Why, you may wonder did we prefer Monday to the more traditional Friday? Because after a weekend of clumsy parenting, unaccomplished tasks, stressful engagement with my husband and a pervasive sense of exhaustion, guilt and incompetence, it was a relief — a life saver, really — to get back to the office. There it was likely that at least once during the day I would feel that I was good at something, that I could complete something, that I could accomplish something worth doing, and that the people around me valued my presence. Our club was mostly made up of women with nuclear families, but we were often joined by those who had extended families and had spent time with them over the weekend.”

“We Still Undress in the Dark, But the Sex Is Great!”

Whether we like it or not, being 50 or 60 means that we aren’t in Kansas any more — body wise. There is no way that the belt we wore in our thirties will fit, even if the hip-huggers we also wore at the time still do.
