Celebrating Women’s History Month:<br /> The Stories We Tell

Back in 1972, when I signed on at Ms. magazine, our mission was to document the history women were making every day. Early detractors, like newsman Harry Reasoner, dismissed those efforts by pronouncing the material too sparse to sustain a magazine for more than a few issues. But Ms. kept on filling its pages. It became the place to find out about women athletes, women scientists and executives as well as the brave rebels who were speaking truth to power — women who went unremarked in the rest of the media.

Also unremarked were women whose accomplishments had been lost to history, because no matter how awe-inspiring a woman’s story would have been if she were a man, it was rarely deemed worth including in the record of human accomplishments; if it had been suggested back in the seventies, the phrase “women’s history” would have been considered an oxymoron.

Celebrating You Gotta Have Girlfriends With My Post-Fifty Posse!

My Post-Fifty Posse

We are five former Ms. magazine colleagues who have been having dinner together once a month for over 20 years. We like to try new places, which is a good thing, since I am not sure we would be welcome back to a restaurant after a visit. We generally sit there for three or four hours, order an assortment of appetizers, laugh uproariously — and pay with five credit cards!

Each brings her own kind of support, encouragement, empathy and humor to the table. We tease each other about the very traits we cherish. There is the Do-Gooder; the Fierce One; the Peacemaker; the Pragmatic Midwesterner and me (“the Terminally Modest One,” according to the Fierce One, whom I consulted). Collectively we are more than the sum of our parts.

7 Reasons I Would Never Want To Be Young Again

I spent last evening at dinner with my “post-50 posse” (that’s what I call that special group of special friends in my eBook You Gotta Have Girlfriends). We have been meeting once a month since 1989, and over the years we have come to count on each other more and more, until, like almost all the women I interviewed about their friendships, “I couldn’t have gotten through it without them” — “it” being any of the challenges, delights and disappointments of navigating a new stage of life.

Age Power: Why Should Celebrating Getting Older Be Wasted On The Young?

Suzanne Braun Levine
Huff/Post50

“To deny your age is to deny yourself,” Oprah said recently. Amen to that. Conversely, admitting your age is empowering not only yourself but every woman who is made to feel less valuable because she is over forty. Or fifty. Or seventy.

My mother denied her age all her life. She was beautiful and youthful-lookyouthing until the day she died at 94. By then she had shaved so many years off her age that she was publicly young enough to be my big sister. But just imagine if women of all ages had the facts and could see how glorious 94 can look.

Celebrate “Girlfriend Power,” Thursday, Aug. 1 – National Girlfriends Day!

I’m celebrating National Girlfriends Day, Thursday, Aug. 1 on Huff/Post50 with a new post: “GIRLFRIEND POWER – Your Post-Fifty Posse Can Change the World.” It will have a slide show featuring women friends, women and girls exercising their power, videos and popular quotes from my ebook You Gotta Have Girlfriends. I believe that work and women working together are among the greatest gifts of the Women’s Movement. My years at Ms. magazine taught me that girlfriends give each other the courage to do things we could not have done alone.

You Are More Beautiful Than You Think!

I’m not crazy about the current Dove campaign in which a police artist draws a portrait of a forty-ish woman from her description (dour and harsh) and then draws another from the description by another woman who has spent a little time with her (warmer and more pleasant looking); the punch line is “you are more beautiful than you think.”

This is not news. We have been prettier than we thought all along. When we are not comparing ourselves unfavorably to models and movie stars — who, the fan magazines show us gleefully, don’t look at all like their glamorous selves when out doing errands — we are comparing present selves with our younger selves.

Remembering My Mother’s Life Affirming Death – Especially on Mother’s Day

Suzanne Braun Levine
Huff/Post 50

As any woman who has lost her mother does, I think of her especially on Mother’s Day. In fact, I think I will always consider Mother’s Day her day, not mine. And when I think of her life, I also remember the gift of her peaceful death.

When she died at 94, I felt sad, of course, but also relieved after several years of slow decline during which no matter how I tried to give her what she needed, I was one degree of deterioration behind in caring for her. And I felt grateful — grateful to her for the loving and gracious way she took her slow leave, and very grateful to the hospice team that guided our last months together. Thanks to them, she died at home, smiling to the end.
